Mr. John Sauder's Visit to Room 17

Today, we were very fortunate to have John Sauder from CBC news come and visit our class. We learned about the role of a meteorologist and how they use various data to forecast the weather. We learned about low pressure and high pressure systems, cold and warm fronts and extreme weather such as tornados and hurricanes!

Here are a few KidBlog excerpts from some of our students. To see their full comments and reflections, click on KidBlog above and select the full post!

Zoe:   Today we met Mr. John Sauder from CBC news! He was a very intelligent meteorologist, he taught us all about wether! I asked a question about how the seasons go in the same order ever year, he gave me a very detailed response. It was very interesting because I learned that it's not how close we are to the sun ( which we are closer to in the winter ) it's how the sun hits our earth!

Carson:  In our visit with John Sauder I learned that hurricanes slow down when they reach land. I also learned that low pressure flows counter clock wise and high pressure flows clock wise.

Steven:  I didn't know that both John Sauder and Chris St Clair were both not meteorologists, but they are both pilots. I didn't know that the winds are different on both sides of a hurricane or that Mars isn't as cold as we think.

Patrick:   Tornado winds often reach 250-300 kilometres per hour and sometimes get to 500 kilometres per hour. Tornadoes are often devastating, smashing houses and knocking down trees. Severe weather such as this forms in low pressure systems. High pressure systems, on the other hand, mean clear, sunny weather.
