Web Literacy

This afternoon we worked on our media smarts and looked at advertising in the media and internet hoaxes.
Is everything we read online true? Of course not!
We took a look at two sites and questioned the validity of both.
Here are some great sites for you to evaluate at home and decide if they're true sites or internet hoaxes! Leave your thoughts in the comments!

The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
The Jackalope
Velcro Crops in California
Dog Island
Protect yourself from Mind Control
Burmese Mountain Dogs

  1. Dog island: Very suspicious. They talked about a 'tiny' island for small dogs, but in the dog statistics thing there was nothing about that. Also, there was a 'send your dog today' button.
Velcro crops: Velcro is plastic so there can't be such a thing as 'Velcro crops'.
Mind control: at the top right corner it says "Save the tree octopus", which our class already verified was fake. If that one is fake I suspect the mind control one is fake too.
Mountain Dogs: I googled burmese mountain dogs and all that came up were links to BERNESE mountain dogs. Further investigation led me to The Museum of Hoaxes website and it talked about BURMESE mountain dogs. I think Burmese Mountain Dogs website is fake.
